Insulin Pump Therapy

What is an insulin pump?

An insulin pump is an option for insulin delivery for those with diabetes instead of having to take multiple daily injections.

It is a small battery-operated device which holds rapid acting insulin. It delivers the insulin via a cannula. Some pumps have tubing, while others are directly stuck onto the skin (known as a 'patch pump').

The pump is programmed to deliver 'basal' insulin according to a person’s needs. This is adjusted as the person's requirements change. The pump also delivers 'bolus' insulin when you tell it you are about to eat carbohydrates, or if you need to 'correct' a high glucose level.

An insulin pump can more closely mimic the insulin delivery of a pancreas and can therefore help with optimising glucose levels and allow for more flexibility. It is however a very personal choice and is not for everyone. Speak to your diabetes health professionals to see if an insulin pump is right for you.

Thinking about using an insulin pump?

Well lucky for you, technology is my specialty!

I am trained and can provide support for all pumps in the Australian market. Insulin pumps are an insulin delivery option for people living with Type 1 Diabetes.

There are many different types of pumps available, with different features. Some pumps can “talk” to specific Continuous Glucose Monitoring systems and have a level of automation in insulin delivery based on a person’s sensor glucose levels. A transition to an insulin pump is a big step and requires ongoing training and support. If you have made the decision to go on an insulin pump, I can provide all the education needed throughout your journey until you feel confident and comfortable with the new technology.

Generally speaking, insulin pumps have a warranty period of 4 years. After this period, you may be due for an upgrade if you would like to continue using a pump. I can help with this too!
